The Academy of Fine Arts in Lynchburg, Virginia, formerly known as the Academy of Music, is one of the city’s most enduring landmarks. Built in 1905, this grand building has been a center of arts and culture for more than a century. However, beyond its reputation for hosting world-class performances, the Academy is also steeped in mysterious tales of ghostly apparitions and paranormal occurrences. From phantom audience members to unexplained noises backstage, the Academy’s haunted reputation has persisted through generations.
A Tragic Fire and Ghostly Residuals
The Academy was partially destroyed by a fire in 1911, which originated in the manager’s apartment above the theater. Although the fire caused extensive damage, the building was eventually restored and reopened, but many believe that the tragedy left behind more than just scars on the structure. It is said that the fire ignited some of the paranormal activity that lingers to this day. People attending events or simply passing through have reported strange sensations—like being watched, cold drafts, and even seeing shadowy figures seated among the audience.
Some of these sightings are tied to phantom patrons, ghostly figures seen in the audience during performances, only to vanish when approached. These apparitions are often described as being dressed in period clothing, suggesting they may be spirits of individuals who attended performances at the Academy before the fire. Witnesses report that these figures sit silently, observing the stage, and disappear into thin air when the lights come up.

Murmurs from Backstage
The backstage area of the Academy is also known for its unexplained happenings. Actors and crew members alike have reported hearing footsteps on creaky wooden floors late at night, well after rehearsals have ended. There have been instances where doors open and close on their own, and props are found in places they shouldn’t be. These stories, repeated by staff over the years, have led many to believe that spirits of past performers or theater workers remain tethered to the stage, unable to leave the life they once loved.
Some speculate that one of the more active spirits is that of a stagehand who died during the early 20th century. His presence has been felt by several members of the Academy’s staff, particularly in the basement and backstage corridors, where the sounds of clanging equipment and heavy footsteps are frequently heard.
The Legend of Fred Dabney
One of the most well-known ghosts of the Academy of Fine Arts is said to be Fred Dabney, a former worker who was dedicated to maintaining the theater during its early years. While there is limited historical documentation about Dabney, his name has been passed down through stories, and many believe he continues to look after the building long after his death. Paranormal tours at the Academy often mention Dabney’s presence, especially in areas like the projection room and catwalk, where employees have reported hearing his footsteps and feeling his presence.
Dabney’s spirit is generally seen as benevolent—a caretaker of sorts, watching over the theater as he did in life. Several visitors on the Academy’s Haunted Theatre Tour have shared stories of encountering cold spots or hearing faint voices, particularly during October when the theater opens its doors to paranormal investigations.
